3D Printed Automobile / / Fuel-Efficient Car Built Using FDM
3D printed cars are no longer confined to small, scale visual concept models. Now, KOR EcoLogic has announced their plan to develop Urbee 2, the first highway-ready, highly fuel-efficient car built using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing technology. The project is in collaboration with RedEye On Demand, a division of Stratasys. Once the KOR EcoLogic team completes the vehicle’s design using CAD software, a Stratasys 3D Printer will build large segments of the car using FDM.
Building upon its conceptual predecessor, Urbee, the Urbee 2 project is scheduled to be on the road in two years. The car will hold two passengers and will be comprised of 40 large 3D printed parts, in comparison with the hundreds of parts that make up the average car.
The first road trip is planned from San Francisco to New York City, with the goal of only using 10 gallons of a fuel. Besides being an awesome way to travel across the United States, this will set a new world record.
