3D Printing Highly Accurate Surgical Models, Counteract Poaching Endangered Animals with 3D Printed Horns, Sustainable Bioprocess for Creating PLA, Software for 3D Printing PCBs, 3D Printed Parts to Withstand Extreme Heat

With so many weekly developments in a fast-changing industry like additive manufacturing, the headlines can really stack up. To cut through the clutter of 3D printing news, check out these staff picks of the week. What do you think is the most impactful development?

3D Printing Creates Major Strides in Neurosurgery through Bio-Accurate Training Simulations

At the Center for Biomedical and Technology Integration, the Stratasys J750 is being used to test the boundaries of 3D printing for new medical applications. With greater texture and color-matching than any 3D printer on the market, the newest PolyJet-based printer is being used to test the creation of custom medical implants, make surgical training implements and enhancing clinical realism of medical models overall // Read More // Watch Video

3D Printing DNA-Matched Rhino Horns to Saturate Market & Stop Poaching

In an effort to curtail illegal poaching of the endangered Rhinocerous, bioengineering firm Pembient is creating indistinguishable rhino horn imitations using 3D bio-printing to integrate actual rhino DNA in their recreations. A sizable part of the illegal wildlife trade, a $20 billion industry, rhino horns sell for approximately $60,000 per kilogram. Pembient hopes to flood the market with indistinguishable fakes and curtail profits for poachers  // Watch Video

Carbios Creates Bioprocess for Producing PLA

French green chemistry company Carbios has made a breakthrough in recycled plastic filaments and bioplastics through the development of a sustainable one-step PLA production process. Its vivo enzymatic polymerisation process of turning lactic acid into a “high-molecular weight homopolymer of PLA” could offer a more competitive and cheaper method for creating PLAs // Read More
