In The Making: Project Pyra and Mars
In building Project Pyra, Fathom Director of Research Carlo Quiñonez aimed to challenge some basic tenets of engineering, including the classic, “keep it simple.” Utilizing the free complexity provided by additive manufacturing, Quiñonez designed an open source, 3D printed incubator, capable of reaching temperatures up to almost 200 degrees Celsius. Whereas nearly all incubators and ovens are constructed with heat-conductive metal, Pyra’s chamber is comprised entirely of engineering-grade thermoplastic.
In The Making’s Dr. Mike North sat down with Quiñonez to discuss applications for Pyra, including simulating the atmosphere of Mars and the project’s implications for the future of manufacturing. Check out the video!
