Guest Speaker Brian McLean of LAIKA
On display until May 20th, many puppets, props and sets from four incredible LAIKA films are part of a major exhibition at the Portland Art Museum (PAM). The exhibit highlights the dynamic and innovative abilities of the companys filmmakers, designers and animators within the last ten years. The award-winning team is highly regarded for pushing the limits of stop-motion animation by way of blending state-of-the-art technologies with traditional techniques. Fathom appreciates this hybridized approach because we also blend advanced technologies with foundational methods to drive greater innovation. That is why we were excited to host Brian McLean, Director of Rapid Prototyping at LAIKA, as the keynote speaker at our annual company kick-off in January. His presentation on how the team leverages 3D printing was impressive. They are definitely super users and we are honored he shared their story with us at our most important employee-focused event of the year.
LAIKA has been a Fathom machine customer for years and McLean has been exploring additive technologies for more than a decade. Just recently, he was recognized with a Scientific and Engineering Oscar for his pioneering work in character animation. Check out an article on Digital Trends to learn more about him and the studios adoption of 3D printing. Theres also a great article published in 2012 on Engadget that highlights their extensive use of different technologies for movies like Coraline and ParaNorman.
The company is continuously advancing its use of 3D printing to advance the design and performance of stop-motion models. As for Stratasys related technologies, LAIKA currently leverages many PolyJet-based systems at its studio in Oregon—both the Connex3 and J750 platforms.
For its latest film, Kubo and the Two Strings, the team also collaborated with Stratasys on both software and hardware to further advance its full-color and multi-material capabilities. The results continue to make headlines.
