Solving the Launch-Hardware Bottlenecks in a Major Medical Device Rollout

When a medical device manufacturer launched its new robotic surgery system, it needed a fast, compliant way to source hardware to support its rollout. With robotic surgery systems, the pressure is not just on the core technology. The supporting hardware must be ready too: brackets, covers, carts, cable-management hardware, service parts and installation fixtures must arrive on time, fit correctly and support validation, deployment and field service. Fathom acted as a responsive manufacturing partner, supplying a broad range of production-ready hardware that kept its rollout schedule moving.

The Problem

  • A medical device manufacturer recently received FDA clearance for a robotic surgery system used in urologic procedures. As its U.S. commercial rollout began, service readiness and installation support mattered just as much as product innovation.

  • For a system like this, launch phases can create mechanical bottlenecks. Sheet-metal enclosures, machined interface hardware, integration fixtures and cosmetic covers must often be produced on compressed schedules while designs are still evolving.

  • Field teams need pilot-install kits, spare parts and labeled assemblies ready for multiple sites at once. At the same time, supplier qualification, documentation and revision control cannot slip in a regulated medical environment where traceability and component quality are critical.

A robotic surgical arm assists in a modern operating room, symbolizing advancements in medical technology and precision.

The Solution

To support this product launch, Fathom leveraged the strengths of multiple facilities, which acted as one coordinated manufacturing network via Fathom’s Program Management Office (PMO).

Denver, CO produced finished sheet-metal panels, laser-cut brackets and small electromechanical assemblies for carts and enclosures.

Round Rock, TX and Minneapolis, MN supplied machined mounts, interface plates, sensor brackets and service hardware.

Hartland, WI supplied prototype housings and molded covers.

Fathom’s Global Network contributed mold tooling, die castings and cost reduction opportunities as production volume grew.

Fathom’s medical manufacturing approach emphasizes hands-on support, rapid iteration, audit readiness and application expertise across device enclosures, surgical tools and other demanding medical components.

The Results

  • Fathom provided the manufacturer with a fast, low-friction way to produce rollout-ready hardware to support installation of its robotic surgery system in multiple hospitals.

  • Instead of managing separate vendors for machined parts, sheet metal and pilot hardware, Fathom provided a single coordinated source for mechanical components, validation requirements and engineering changes without slowing the broader rollout.

  • The result is a more responsive supply path for installs, spares and service support, with documentation and revision control sized for low-to-mid volume deployment. That helped the manufacturer reduce schedule risk and keep commercial momentum moving after regulatory clearance.
