Solving the Mechanical Bottlenecks in Military Ground Vehicle Computing

A major defense OEM won a contract to fast-track development of next-generation, AI-enhanced smart vehicle displays for military vehicles. It needed a manufacturing partner that could quickly prototype, build and test key mechanical components to install them in multiple types of vehicles. Fathom confidently handled the fabrication, prototyping and build management of multiple components and helped keep this tight-timeframe project on track.

The Problem

  • Software and AI were advancing quickly, but the physical hardware lagged behind – an issue compounded by many late design ECOs.

  • The highly customized components had to fit different vehicle platforms and support multiple subsystems.

  • The smart display hardware had to survive vibration, shock, dust and repeated install/removal cycles.

  • Integration and deployment schedules were extremely tight.

The Solution

  • To meet these needs, Fathom leveraged the engineering and production expertise of three of its facilities.

  • Round Rock, TX: CNC machined display frames, thermal plates, interface brackets and structural mounts.

  • Denver, CO: Quick-turn sheet-metal covers, rear housings, access doors and panel modifications.

  • Ithaca, NY: Prototype fixtures, fit-check hardware, and low-volume pilot kits for integration and vehicle test events.

  • Fathom acted as a rapid-response domestic hardware partner that compressed the time from revised CAD release to installable vehicle-ready hardware.

The Results

  • Fathom provided a low-friction path from engineering validation to low-volume production and helped the customer keep this multi-faceted, short-timeframe program on schedule.

  • Strong engineering support on the front end of this project resulted in reduced schedule exposure from late-stage ECOs.
