A machine shop is a facility where different subtractive manufacturing technologies are performed. Skilled experts in the machine shop can assist with design and fabrication, finding you the best solution for your unique project. Once a part has been made, machine shops can also assist with finishing services and assembly.
CNC milling is used for parts with no cylindrical features. During the milling process, the workpiece is held in place while a cutter rotates around the piece. CNC milling can be used to create a finished product from raw material or as a secondary process to add definition. CNC milling can be used with metals, glass, plastics, ceramics, elastomers, and composites.
CNC turning is used to create parts with cylindrical features. During the CNC turning process, the workpiece rotates at a high speed while a single point cutting tool removes material. CNC turning is suitable for metal alloys.
Wire EDM produces parts with complex geometries and high accuracy. During the wire EDM process, a tool discharges sparks that melt through the material, making cuts. The workpiece is submerged in water throughout the entire process, and any waste is flushed away. EDM can be used on titanium, carbon steel, tungsten and other electrically conductive materials.
Waterjet machining makes parts with outstanding edge quality. During the water jet cutting process, a pump with a cutting head as small as a human hair generates an extremely high-pressured stream of water. The water is mixed with an abrasive (garnet) to cut through thick material such as steel. Materials used for waterjet cutting include aluminum, titanium, steel, Inconel, brass and composites
Plasma cutting produces highly durable parts. During the plasma cutting process, material is shaped using a plasma torch. An electric arc forms between the cathode and workpiece or anode. The electrode is submersed in water or an air-cooled gas nozzle to constrict the arc and form the plasma jet. Plasma cutting is used with metals such as aluminum, copper and steel.
