The Manufacturing Exchange explores what happens when manufacturing gets difficult.
Because complex parts don’t become repeatable by accident.
Some parts are difficult before the first cut is ever made.
The material is tough. The tolerance is tight. The geometry is unforgiving. The inspection requirements are serious. The supplier list gets short fast.
At this Manufacturing Exchange, we are bringing manufacturing leaders from across the Chicago region together for a practical conversation about what it takes to turn hard-to-machine metals and complex parts into repeatable production.
Hosted at Precision Process by Fathom, this event will feature a live panel discussion, small-group shop tours, hands-on material experiences, food trucks, drinks, and time to connect with peers who understand the pressure behind difficult production work.
It is an evening built for practical insight, honest conversation, and a closer look at how difficult parts actually get made.
When the part is difficult, the plan matters more
A difficult material does not just change how a part is machined. It changes who can make it, how it gets quoted, how it gets inspected, how long it takes, and how much risk the program carries.
That is why complex parts need more than capacity. They need early conversations between engineering, sourcing, quality, and manufacturing teams before the wrong assumptions become expensive problems.
This Manufacturing Exchange is focused on those conversations: what to consider earlier, what to ask suppliers, when to redesign, and how to move difficult parts toward repeatable production with fewer surprises.
An evening built around real manufacturing problems
This event is designed to get past the surface-level conversation and into the decisions that shape difficult production work. Through a live panel discussion, small-group facility tours, and hands-on material experiences, attendees will explore how complex parts move from challenging RFQ to repeatable production.
Here is what you can expect:
Live Panel Discussion
A moderated conversation with local manufacturing leaders on how teams balance material performance, manufacturability, cost, lead time, supplier capability, quality, and production risk.
Small-Group Shop Tours
Step inside Precision Process by Fathom for a closer look at CNC machining, EDM, grinding, inspection, and the processes behind high precision components.
The Impossible Bar
A hands-on material and manufacturability experience where guests can explore the metals, features, tolerances, and design decisions that make certain parts difficult to quote, machine, inspect, and scale.
Peer Networking
Connect with engineering, operations, quality, sourcing, supply chain, and manufacturing leaders who are working through similar production challenges.
Panel Discussion
Hard Materials, Hard Decisions How Leaders Balance Performance, Manufacturability, and Risk
When performance requirements push teams toward difficult metals, tight tolerances, complex geometries or specialized processes, manufacturing decisions become business decisions.
This panel will explore how engineering, operations, quality, sourcing, and technical leaders weigh material performance against manufacturability, cost, lead time, supplier capability, production readiness, and risk.
We will talk about the decisions that shape complex production, including:
- When material performance justifies manufacturing complexity
- How teams decide whether to redesign, re-source or absorb higher production cost
- What risk looks like in hard material programs
- How quality requirements influence supplier selection
- Which decisions need to happen earlier in the product lifecycle
Shop Tour
Inside Precision Process by Fathom
During the event, guests will have the opportunity to join small-group tours inside Fathom’s Elk Grove facility.
This site specializes in close tolerance, high precision machining of tough metals and complex parts. The tour will give attendees a look at how CNC machining, EDM, grinding, inspection, and process control come together when the part, material, or tolerance leaves little room for error.
Tour groups will be kept small so guests can get closer to the work, ask better questions, and hear directly from the people who understand these processes every day.
The Impossible Bar
A hands-on look at why some parts are so hard to make.
The Impossible Bar is part material station, part engineering conversation, and part reality check.
Guests will get a closer look at the metals, features, tolerances, and design choices that make certain parts difficult to quote, machine, inspect, and repeat.
Expect to explore questions like:
- Why do some materials drive up cost and lead time?
- When is CNC the right answer, and when do EDM or grinding enter the picture?
- How do tight tolerances change the production plan?
- What makes a part risky from a supplier’s point of view?
- How can better front-end decisions make production smoother later?
This is a chance to see the complexity up close and talk through the decisions that make difficult parts possible.
Agenda
We have designed this event to bring together practical manufacturing insight, shop-floor access, and meaningful networking in a focused three-hour experience.
-
4:00 PM – Arrival, Shop Tours, and The Impossible Bar
Check in and connect with local manufacturing leaders and the Fathom team. Small groups will rotate through guided facility tours. And, The Impossible Bar will be open for guests to get a closer look at the metals, features, tolerances, and design choices that make certain parts difficult to quote, machine, inspect, and repeat.
-
5:30 PM – Live Panel Discussion: Hard Materials, Hard Decisions
Join local manufacturing leaders for a conversation on performance, manufacturability, cost, lead time, quality, supplier strategy, and risk.
-
6:30 PM – Food, Drinks, and Networking
Continue conversations with panelists, peers, and Fathom technical experts.
-
7:00 PM – Event Concludes
What You’ll Learn
Who Should Attend?
This event is designed for people who are responsible for making difficult parts possible.
You should join us if you are a:
- Engineering leader
- Operations leader
- Quality leader
- Sourcing or supply chain leader
- Manufacturing leader
- Product development leader
- Program manager

- Executive working with complex production challenges
This event will be especially relevant if your team works with hard to machine metals, tight tolerances, long lead times, supplier constraints, quality requirements, or parts that are difficult to quote, source, inspect, or scale.
Why Fathom?
A small site built for tough manufacturing challenges.
Precision Process by Fathom may not be our largest facility, but it plays an important role in Fathom’s manufacturing network.
The Chicago team specializes in high precision work where material, geometry, process control, and inspection all matter. It is the kind of site built for parts that need more than capacity. They need judgment, discipline, and the right manufacturing plan.
This Manufacturing Exchange is a chance to see that work up close and connect with the people who understand what it takes to make difficult parts repeatable.
