Aluminum CNC Machining

Fathom offers aluminum CNC machining of high-quality metal parts to its customers. Fathom can manufacture parts with good detail using the most up-to-date CNC technology. Our team has tackled thousands of CNC machined projects and is ready to work on your design today.

What is Aluminum CNC Machining? / /

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining is a manufacturing technology wherein pre-programmed software guides the movement of factory tools and machinery. CNC technology controls mills, routers, grinders, lathes and more. CNC machining facilitates three-dimensional cutting tasks using a single set of prompts. The automated nature of the CNC process eliminates the need for a live operator. CNC machining allows for the manufacturing of solid materials, including metals such as aluminum.

What are the Benefits of Aluminum in CNC Machining? / /

Aluminum is a popular choice for CNC machining for multiple reasons. Aluminum is easy to machine and can be cut effectively, chipped and shaped. Due to its high machinability, it can be machined faster than other metals. Aluminum has an oxidized outer layer that offers corrosion resistance. A strong material, aluminum is suitable for parts for various industries, including aerospace, automotive, healthcare, electronics, etc. Aluminum has a high strength-to-weight ratio, and its light weight makes it perfect for aircraft and automotive pieces. Aluminum is receptive to finishing processes, including anodization and painting. Lastly, aluminum is recyclable, which helps minimize waste during manufacturing as any excess material can be repurposed.

What Types of Aluminum is Used in CNC Machining? / /

Fathom offers many different types of aluminum for CNC machining, including:

Aluminum 6061-T6:

  • 6061-T6 is a popular material that has a large variety of uses. Aluminum 6061-T6 has excellent machinability, can be heat-treated and has a great strength to weight ratio. Computer parts, automotive parts, bicycle frames and more are made from aluminum 6061-T6.

Aluminum 7075-T6:

  • 7075-T6 is used for projects that require high-stress and high-performance parts. Aluminum 7075-T6 has a great strength-to-weight ratio and hardness but is less corrosion-resistant than other aluminum. Military parts, missile parts, sporting goods and more are made from aluminum 7075-T6.

Aluminum 6060:

  • 6060 is a versatile material. Aluminum 6060 has medium strength, good corrosion resistance, weldability, and formability. Common applications of aluminum 6060 include architectural parts, ladders, rails, fences, electronic modules, machinery, parts for trucks, irrigation, pipes, furniture and more.

Aluminum 6082:

  • 6082 can be used for many applications. Aluminum 6082 offers excellent strength and corrosion resistance. Aluminum 6082 is common in the construction industry.

Aluminum 5083:

  • 5083 is popular for parts exposed to extreme environments. Aluminum 5083 offers excellent strength, chemical, corrosion, and heat resistance. Ships, rail cars, pressure vessels, and vehicles use aluminum 5083.

Aluminum 6063:

  • 6063 is used for architectural applications. Aluminum 6063 offers a good surface finish and excellent corrosion resistance and can be easily welded and anodized. Common applications of aluminum 6063 include window frames, doors, irrigation and extrusions.

Aluminum 5052:

  • The strength of 5052 can be enhanced by cold working. Aluminum 5052 offers weldability, corrosion resistance and medium to high strength. Applications of aluminum 5052 include fuel tanks, utensils, fan blades, etc.

Aluminum 2024:

  • 2024 is commonly used in aerospace applications. Aluminum 2024 offers fatigue resistance, fracture toughness, and moderate to high strength. Aircraft and automotive parts are often made from aluminum 2024.

Aluminum 7050:

  • 7050 should not be welded. Aluminum 7050 offers toughness, good mechanical strength, and good corrosion resistance. Parts for aircraft are made using aluminum 7050.

Aluminum MIC6:

  • MIC6 is made using alloys and a casting method, resulting in a cast plate with desirable properties. Aluminum MIC6 is smooth, lightweight, has excellent tolerance and machinability, and is free from contaminants. Electronics, machining parts, and laser technology is made from aluminum MIC6.

Aluminum 2017:

  • 2017 is a versatile raw material. Aluminum 2017 provides ductility, machinability, corrosion resistance, and great strength. Rivets, fasteners, pulleys, knitting needles, and aerospace parts are all made using aluminum 2017.

Aluminum 2014:

  • 2014 is used for applications requiring high strength. Aluminum 2014 can be heat treated and offers good machinability. Aerospace and defense parts are made using aluminum 2014.
