3D Printing Wizard of Oz Fathom

3D Printing The Wizard of Oz

Inspired by the new multi-material color 3D printing available on the Objet500 Connex3 and the 75th anniversary honorary mention of The Wizard of Oz at the Oscars on Sunday (March 2), the Fathom team embarked on a magical quest of their own — to 3D print some of the most recognizable film memorabilia in movie history. Created using Rhino CAD software, an industrial designer at Fathom first built each gift given to the main characters from the Wizard of Oz. The Scarecrow receives a diploma, the Tin Man a heart-shaped pocket watch and the Lion a medal. For Dorothy, a pair of bejeweled slippers were created, the most treasured costume accessory of all from the feature film. Each design was 3D printed on the Objet500 Connex3 at the Oakland-based 3D printing production center.

Stratasys released the 3D printer to the market in January with multi-material options in vibrant colors, the only 3D printer of its kind. Just as The Wizard of Oz was remarkable for its use of Technicolor, the Connex3’s unique ability to print in multiple materials, colors and shore durometers in a single build as one part with no assembly required is cause for celebration and recognition.
